VDI Voice Dialogue Facilitator Training FAQ

Who participates in the Voice Dialogue Facilitator Training?

Voice Dialogue is a psychospiritual practice that provides experiential tools for developing consciousness. Voice Dialogue can be used by therapists with their clients and it also adapts well to other contexts such as business, the arts, general health care, personal growth, and any context that involves relationships between people. At VDI, in addition to counselors, coaches, psychologists, massage therapists, also lawyers, software developers, artists, doctors, school teachers, nurses, university professors, personal trainers, acupuncturists, entrepreneurs, and more have participated in our Facilitator Training.

How much background/experience do I need in order to take the Facilitator Training?

It is very helpful to have experienced Voice Dialogue facilitation as a client before the training – in fact we require participants to have at least one session before the program starts. You will also need to complete several reading and listening assignments by the time the training begins. If you are intending to use this work professionally as a counselor or coach, you will need to fulfill the credentialing requirements of your state or country in order to do so.

I’m a coach, not a mental health counselor – is the Facilitator Training appropriate for working with my coaching clients?

Voice Dialogue is used world wide as a tool for coaches in working with their clients, both in corporate settings and in life coaching. Voice Dialogue is essentially a process that helps people use their internal opposites to their advantage rather than remaining stuck in a conflict between them. An example of opposites might be on the one hand a part of a person that really wants success and another part that is afraid that success will cause problems in their personal relationships.

I don’t really want to facilitate Voice Dialogue professionally. What would the benefit be for me taking the training?

The Facilitator Training is open to both professionals who would like to use Voice Dialogue with their clients and also to individuals who are drawn to learning this work for their own personal development. The training offers everyone, professional and lay person alike, tools to live gracefully and successfully as a human being in our very complex world and the ability to understand and live relationships of all kinds on a new and deeper level. Our graduates have reported improvement in communication with their bosses, co-workers and employees, as well as with their partners, family members and friends. We have often received feedback from our professional graduates that the training gave them as much for their own personal growth as it did for their professional development. Remarkably, individuals who took the training purely for their own personal growth have also reported to us that Voice Dialogue became useful to them in the context of their work in surprisingly effective ways, even though their work was not in a therapeutic or coaching field.

I’ve been receiving private Voice Dialogue sessions for some time now and am beginning to become interested in learning facilitation. What other preparation do I need to do to be eligible for the facilitator training?

Actually, receiving sessions is one of the very best preparations one can do to be ready to learn how to facilitate, and we require all training participants to do sessions in conjunction with their training.

I’d like to learn to use the Voice Dialogue method, but I don’t want to be part of a therapy group. How personal is the sharing in your Facilitator Training?

All our trainings and workshops at The Voice Dialogue Institute are psycho-educational, not psychotherapeutic. We encourage people to share personal information only to the degree that they feel comfortable. You are the one who determines your focus for the work, and you are always free to request that your partner in a practice exercise keep their sharing to a level that is comfortable for both of you.

I’d like to use Voice Dialogue with my life partner, not as a professional with clients. Is this training appropriate for me?

Definitely. Voice Dialogue was actually first developed by psychologists, Hal and Sidra Stone, as a way learn and grow in their own personal relationship with each other. Relationship has always been and remains a central focus of this work. If possible, it would be optimal for you and your partner to take the training together.

Will I be able to use Voice Dialogue long distance – over Skype or FaceTime?

Right from the start, we encourage our students to begin practicing with each other long distance. For participants who live in areas where there are no other facilitators, practicing over the phone, Skype, or FaceTime is the best alternative. What we want people to learn and get good at is picking up on energetic shifts regardless of whether they can see the person they are working with – they need to be able to feel the person across the world! That said, practice in person, with supervision during the times we will be meeting together, is crucial for developing a level of energetic sensitivity that can then be used effectively in working long distance.

Is it possible to become certified as a Voice Dialogue Facilitator?

Voice Dialogue is a psychospiritual practice. The goal of the work is consciousness; and even though facilitators can become very skilled, one’s level of consciousness is not something that can ever be certified. Drs. Hal and Sidra Stone make the following statement on their website, http://voicedialogueinternational.com/resources-index.htm: “As the originators of Voice Dialogue, we do not support certification and we have never certified anyone... As far as we are concerned, there is no certified Voice Dialogue facilitator or teacher and no teacher or trainer qualified to certify others.” The joy of working with this method is in unfolding an approach to personality and relationship that can enrich your work with others and also deepen your own personal process for a lifetime. It is far more complex and evolving than a set of skills or theoretical knowledge that can be certified.

We plan to offer CECs through NASW. We will have more detailed information posted in early 2015.

What does the Certificate of Completion mean?

The Voice Dialogue Institute offers a Certificate of Completion that states that the participant completed the Facilitator Training and the total amount of education hours. This certificate allows you to apply for Advanced Trainings at VDI. Please Note: This is not a certification in Voice Dialogue facilitation, and we do not guarantee that this certificate is acceptable towards CECs required by your state.

What is the schedule of trainings?

We will meet Thursday through Sunday afternoon for our in-person sessions. Our five Teleseminars will be scheduled during our first meeting and attendance is required.

We strive to support both body and mind and provide a good balance in all of our trainings. We take snack and body stretch breaks and we have a relaxed lunch break. We will send participants the specific training schedule information closer to the date of our first meeting.

What Materials will I need to have for the Training?

You will need:

- The Voice Dialogue Facilitator’s Handbook, Miriam Dyak. This is out of print, but we have copies still available for our students and an e-book is forthcoming, possibly by the beginning of the new year.

- Exploring Your Inner Landscape 3-CD set, Miriam Dyak

  (Available for purchase from VDI)

- The Aware Ego Process (5-CD set or mp3), Hal and Sidra Stone

MP3 files and CDs are available for purchase and download at: http://voicedialogueinternational.com/bookshop/allMP3s.htm

Are there make-up sessions if I miss any part of the training?

This training is designed for a small group and your absence makes a difference both for you and for the entire group. We can schedule a makeup session if you miss up to one day of a 4 day in person class. You will be charged an additional fee (our discounted private session rates) for the makeup session. However, if you are taking this training for CECs, missing any part of a class is not possible as attendance is mandatory for CECs.

What is your refund and cancellation policy?

We keep our trainings intentionally small so that we can give each participant the individual attention and personalized feedback we feel is essential in order to learn the energetically based process of Voice Dialogue facilitation. Once you decide to train with us, we begin immediately to take your specific needs and interests into consideration as we develop the flexible part of our curriculum. It is, therefore, very important both for our planning and for people who may be on a waiting list to let us know as soon as possible if your plans change and you need to drop out of the training.
